Evolution Equations for Slowly Rotating Stars

We present a hyperbolic formulation of the evolution equations describing non-radial perturbations of slowly rotating relativistic stars in the Regge–Wheeler gauge. We demonstrate the stability preperties of the new evolution set of equations and compute the polar w-modes for slowly rotating stars.

Evolution equations for the perturbations of slowly rotating relativistic stars

We present a new derivation of the equations governing the oscillations of slowly rotating relativistic stars. Previous investigations have been mostly carried out in the Regge–Wheeler gauge. However, in this gauge the process of linearizing the Einstein field equations leads to perturbation equations which as such cannot be used to perform numerical time evolutions. It is only through the tedi...

Crustal Oscillations of Slowly Rotating Relativistic Stars

We study low-amplitude crustal oscillations of slowly rotating relativistic stars consisting of a central fluid core and an outer thin solid crust. We estimate the effect of rotation on the torsional toroidal modes and on the interfacial and shear spheroidal modes. The results compared against the Newtonian ones for wide range of neutron star models and equations of state.

Inertial modes of slowly rotating isentropic stars

We investigate inertial mode oscillations of slowly and uniformly rotating, isentropic, Newtonian stars. Inertial mode oscillations are induced by the Coriolis force due to the star’s rotation, and their characteristic frequencies are comparable with the rotation frequency Ω of the star. So called r-mode oscillations form a sub-class of the inertial modes. In this paper, we use the term “r-mode...

Slowly Rotating Homogeneous Stars and the Heun Equation

The scheme developed by Hartle for describing slowly rotating bodies in 1967 was applied to the simple model of constant density by Chandrasekhar and Miller in 1974. The pivotal equation one has to solve turns out to be one of Heun’s equations. After a brief discussion of this equation and the chances of finding a closed form solution, a quickly converging series solution of it is presented. A ...
